Electrifying volcano eruption set off the most extreme lightning ever recorded on Earth. The Hunga volcano was at its most temperamental on January 15, 2021, when a volcanic plume exploded about 58 km (36 mi) into the sky. Lightning shot up to 30 km (19 miles) high, beating even cyclones and supercells.
